Simran & Harpreet

Brampton, ON → Jaipur · November 2025 · 320 guests · 3 days · Sikh, Punjabi

“My mother-in-law in Jalandhar and I were on the same WhatsApp group as the planner. For the first time, we were not arguing through my husband.”

Simran is a pharmacist in Brampton. Harpreet builds software in Toronto. His parents are in Jalandhar. The wedding was to be in Jaipur — a fort sangeet, an anand karaj at a gurdwara, a reception at a palace hotel.

The hard part was not the wedding. It was the planning. Simran and her mother-in-law had never met in person. Every decision — the caterer, the colour of the pagdi, the length of the baraat — was a relay through Harpreet, and it was breaking him.

We put Simran, her mother-in-law, and Ananya on one WhatsApp group on day one. Ananya sent a daily note: here is the shortlist, here is the price, here is what I recommend, here is the question I need both of you to answer. Decisions that used to take a week took a day.

The thing that nearly went wrong: the anand karaj fell on a date the gurdwara had double-booked. Ananya caught it at the contract stage, not the wedding stage, and moved the ceremony to a private gurdwara hall the family approved over video.

The money was held in three milestones. The final release happened after Harpreet's father confirmed the reception had run to plan. Simran watched the whole wedding build from Brampton, on video, every evening, for two weeks. She landed five days before. Her mother-in-law met her at the airport and hugged her like they had known each other for years — because, by then, they had.
